If you plan to travel from April-September, we suggest that you reserve your space at least 60 days in advance (90 is preferable). If traveling during low season (Oct-March) we advise making a reservation 6 weeks in advance. Once we have confirmed your reservation and bought your permits it’s not possible to change the date of trek departure and/or change the name or passport number on the permit.

The Inca Trail is by far the most famous trek in South America and is rated by many to be in the top 5 treks in the world. In just 26 miles (45km) it manages to combine beautiful mountain scenery, lush cloud-forest, subtropical jungle and, of course, a stunning mix of Inca paving stones, ruins and tunnels. The final destination of the trail just cannot be beaten: Machu Picchu, the mysterious "Lost City of the Incas".

There are literally thousands of kilometers of "Inca Trails"; this specific one, starts at km82 (82 km along the railway from Cusco to Aguas Calientes) and treks high up into the mountains passing the Inca ruins of Llactapata, Runkurakay, Sayacmarca, Phuyupatamarca and Wiñay Wayna before finally arriving at Machu Picchu for sunrise on the 4th day of the trek.

This trail is what remains from one of the ancient paths to Machu Picchu. This path wasn't for the transportation of products, people or animals, it was used for religious purposes as a pilgrimage done by the Inca king, the royalty and the priests. Along the path, they built many ceremonial sites to worship the snow-capped mountains as Veronica Peak. They considered the mountains as gods and protectors of the Inca people.

Itinerary

DAY 1 CUSCO/CHILLCA/PATALLACTA/HUAYLLABAMBA

Our vehicle takes us to the starting point of our trek;
The trail follows the left bank of the Urubamba River with views of Veronica Mt. arriving to Llactapata ruins which where restored, we can explore this incredible place before to continue upstream to the Indian community of Huayllabamba.

DAY 2 HUAYLLABAMBA/PATALLACTA/LLULLUCHAPAMPA/PACAYMAYO

From our camp the trail ascends steeply to a large pampa below the first pass where we have lunch.
Hiking gradually up hill in about two more hours we get to Warmiwañuska pass (4,050mts /13,280ft) the first and the highest pass with Breath‑taking view of Mount Huayanay.
From here a quick descend by a recently restored trail with staircases take us to Pacaymayo River where we camp.

DAY 3 PACAYMAYO/WINAY WAYNA

Today is the longest and the most interesting, the trail climbs to the impressive ruins of Runkuraqay, then we continue slowly to the second pass with incredible views of the Vilcanota mountain range.

Now the trail descend to Sayaqmarka, a pre-Hispanic complex with narrow streets and buildings erected on different levels, shrines, patios, canals and a protecting outer wall.

On continue to Phuyupatamarca constructed near the third pass with extraordinary views of the Mountain chains and the Urubamba canyon. Now a flagstone trail winds sharply down into the cloud forest arriving to Wiñay Wayna ruins that has wonderful agricultural terraces, an small religious sector, and the residential area where the houses are located.

DAY 4 WINAY WAYNA/MACHUPICCHU

A two hours hike will take us to Inti Puncu pass (the gate of the Sun) where we see the magnificent lost city of the Incas at our feet. One hour more downhill and we get to the ruins.

Attencion!!

Attencion !
There are new regulations from the Peruvian government on the trail, in a bid to protect its fragile eco-structure from over-use. These proposals have been aimed at reducing the numbers of trekkers on the trail .Now there are only 500 persons allowed on the trail, in these 500 persons are all the guides, porters, cooks, for the 4 and 2 days trail included. That's why we need your reservation in high season at least 60 TO 90 days in advance and in high season even faster ! We recommend that you make a reservation for the Inca Trail as far in advance as possible. In the low season (Oct-March) we advise making a reservation 6 weeks in advance. For the months of May and September we recommend making a reservation 12 weeks in advance.Lares and Salkantay With Machu picchu is always possible. If you don't make a reservation and pay your trek deposit in advance, we won't be able to buy your trek permits. Once we have confirmed your reservation and bought your permits then it's not possible to change the date of trek departure and it's prohibited to change the name or passport number on the permit. In high season there is sometimes a waiting list for more than 3 MONTH! It's being impossible for visitors to purchase last minute spaces on the Inca Trail upon arrival (at least legitimately anyway). If you turn up in Cusco in the low season (November to April) you maybe still find space available 5-7 days prior to the trek departure date, if you take the risk and have the time to wait, but these rules are changing constantly!
